2-time Olympian Macartney retires from ski racing (AP)
Two-time Olympian Scott Macartney has decided to retire from ski racing after a 12-year career with the national team. The 32-year-old of Crystal Mountain, Wash., says hip, knee and head injuries over the past few seasons were simply his body's way of "telling me it was time." Macartney, a speed specialist, started 98 World Cup races in his career and had two podium finishes.
Jonsson wins men's sprint; American Newell third (AP)
Emil Jonsson of Sweden won a men's 1.2-kilometer cross country World Cup sprint Thursday, and Andrew Newell of the U.S. placed third 2 seconds back. Jonsson finished in 2 minutes, 57.9 seconds to become the first non-Norwegian to win the men's sprint in Drammen, Norway, which held its inaugural race in 2003.
Skier Calhoun to carry US flag for Paralympics (AP)
Alpine skier Heath Calhoun will carry the flag for the U.S. Paralympic Team at the opening ceremonies of the Paralympic Games. The U.S. Olympic Committee announced the selection of the Iraq war veteran from Bristol, Tenn., on Thursday. The opening ceremonies will be held Friday in Vancouver. Calhoun lost both legs above the knee while serving as a squad leader for the 101st Airborne Division.

Vonn crashes, will still ski for overall title (AP)
Lindsey Vonn crashed and bruised her right knee during the World Cup giant slalom Thursday, but is expected to compete Friday in the super-G in an attempt to win her third straight overall title. Vonn fell in first run of the giant slalom when her skis locked, she spun in the air and crashed into the safety netting.
Canadian skater Chipeur withdraws from worlds (AP)
Canadian silver medalist Vaughn Chipeur, who finished 23rd at the Vancouver Olympics, has withdrawn from the World Figure Skating Championships with a right foot injury. He will be replaced by Kevin Reynolds. Chipeur has been bothered by the foot problem all season. An MRI exam after the Olympics revealed a ligament on the outside of his foot has torn away from the bone and may require surgery.

Hoelzl wins giant slalom World Cup title (AP)
Olympic silver medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia won the final giant slalom race of the season Thursday and Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany clinched the World Cup title in the event by finishing second. Maria Riesch of Germany placed third to cut Lindsey Vonn's overall World Cup lead to 165 points with two races remaining.

Erik Guay of Canada produced a daring run to win the final race of the season Thursday and claim a World Cup title in the super-G. Guay became the first Canadian to win a crystal globe since Steve Podborski in 1982. Hockey Canada says the gear was misplaced rather than stolen, with both items ending up in the wrong place in the process of packing and shipping equipment after the Olympic final.

US team to train at London university before games (AP)
The U.S. Olympic team will prepare and train for the 2012 London Games at a university complex near the athletes' village. The University of East London announced Wednesday that about 600 U.S. athletes and 500 support staff will use its campuses, gyms and sports facilities, including a new $26.8 million indoor sports center that is expected to open next year.
Austrian ski jump and Nordic combi director quits (AP)
Former Olympic ski jump champion Toni Innauer has left the Austrian ski federation after 17 years as sport director for ski jumping and Nordic combined. The 51-year-old Innauer, who won gold at the 1980 Lake Placed Games and silver four years earlier in Innsbruck, said Wednesday that he got "several offers" but that he won't join a foreign ski federation for at least the next year.
Britain targets 10 medals at Euro Championships (AP)
British athletes have been given a goal of winning at least 10 medals at the European Championships to keep the country on track for fourth place at the London 2012 Olympics. Funding body UK Sport wants Britain to finish fourth in the medal table for a second straight Summer Games and says athletes could win as many as 15 at the July 26-Aug.
