planning a practice

Greetings fellow teachers of this great game! I am a younger guy who is just learning how to teach the game of basketball to his team properly. I would appreciate any advice about how to better plan practice however because that is something that i have struggled with. I currently coach 5th grade boys, but i have experience with 7/8 girls for 2 years. here is a copy of what a average day of practice looks like for my team. 1 hour 15 min practice 6 min of having some type of full court conditioning (such as 3vs2vs1, 3 man weave with shooter, etc) 6 min of ball handling with doing several different drills for no less than 30 seconds (with each hand) or up to 45 seconds then we go into our area of concentration for the day, since we practice 2 days a week, one is a offensive practice and one is a defensive practice. this will entail usually 4 or 5 8 min. drills that will finally come into our main emphasis for that session. Then after a water break, we switch gears for roughly 20 min and do about 3 drills for our main emphasis for that session. On a day when i am teaching a play(s) we will usually run through it several times on air with different coronations of players before throwing in live bodies to defend it. then we will end with a conditioning drill/situation scrimmage for the remainder of practice. I heavily believe in teaching in drill progression, I believe that each practice should build upon the last. I welcome/appreciate any and all suggestions, thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Good organization to your practice

Coach, it appears you have a good sense of use of time and how to get the most out of limited practice time. One thing to keep in mind as you go through a season is to allow "review" time to go back and re-emphasize team or individual skills areas where your team may be backsliding. Keep in mind that even when a skill is highly automated without practice there is a residual slide in performance. You might ad a "refresher" drill or two that you can change out from practice to practice based upon your teams performances in the game or games. The farther your team is away from remembering the critical elements of a skill being executed the less likely it will stay relatively automated. Good luck as your season progresses.
