Triangle Offense

I coach a 17u AAU team and I was trying to get some advice on the Triangle offense. Last year our team was very successful (24-10, number 1 seed in DII nationals) I've ran several offenses in the past including the Dribble Drive Attack, 5 Game Motion, and the Princeton offense. Right now I'm studying on offenses out of the 1-4 High and the Triangle offense. I really love all the options the Triangle presents but before I try to put it in I was wondering if it would be possible for our teams to learn this offense in AAU. We usually practice 3 days a week for an hour and half each session. What I was thinking about doing is breaking it down and teaching the basic principles in our younger teams and adding more every year. Please let me know if you think it would be possible to run the Triangle in the short time we have in the AAU season. Thanks

Learning Curve for Triangle

Coach, With most offenses that have multiple levels of options and read keys there is a learning curve. What I have observed with the Lakers for example is that it takes the new players about a year to learn the basic options, and a 2nd or 3rd year to become the more advanced options. So the answer is a very qualified maybe. You can put in the the basics. However if you are expecting your kids to learn this in a few weeks and automate it to the point of advanced decision making you will have to adjust your goals. In my opinion this is a terrific offense if you have good athletes, want them to have excellent spacing, and the ability to use their individual skills to create plays. BUT and it's a big but, you should expect a 2-3 year learning curve both for yourself and your team to see it operating the way Coach Winter designed it.
