Pre-game Warm-Up Drills for the Post

We will shortly have most of our over 800 drills back up on the Highway which should provide you some additional resources to search through for some creative ideas from coaches around the world.   Thanks for being patient as we work to build back our content library with what we have stored off-line.

The drills I like best involve multiple players and balls because it provides you greater repetitions in a shorter period of time, always a problem when warm-up time is short.  For post players consider something like a Post Feed Screen Across Drill where you start with two post players executiving a cross screen.  You might even start with a wing/guard in the low post and have the PG dribble out the wing (who cuts off the screen to the top of the circle).  Off the dribble out by the PG hav ethe big men execute the post to post screen.  Have two defenders play somewhat passive defense on the post players to simulate game action and change up their post defensive positioning to get the post player to read where to attack the basket.  On the post feed, the ball side post attempts to seal the defender and make a power drop step move while the passer flares to the ball side corner for a pass back from a coach up top (and a shot).  The another coach up top passes to the wing off the top of the circle who either takes the shot, or feeds the weak side post player off the screen who has duck and flashed into the middle of the paint where they finish with a jump hook, square up, or dunk under move.  You can create drills like this simply by breaking down certain offensive sets or players you run and have the players executive them in warm-ups.

In general I like to close the warm-up drills just prior to the start of the game with two line quick passing and lay-ups or shots to keep their heart rates up and primed for tip-off.  Some coaches warm their players up hard and then they cool down too long before the start of the game. Hopefully some other coaches will add some of their pre-game warm-up drills for bigs in our Posting-up forum.
